Light Within the Cracks lifts the cloud of silence on mental health struggles, including anxiety and depression, by looking at their relationship to issues such as sexual trauma, mixed immigration status, technological “numbing,” and socially-constructed identities. Light Within the Cracks is a timely artistic work that asks us to examine our own biases and make connections between the current socio-political climate and our collective mental health. Alongside the exploration of trauma and struggle is the celebration of the resilience of the human spirit, especially when we are in a community of mutual respect, love, and support.
Through dance, spoken word, and video content, our CREATE Performance Group will share personal narratives and reflect on the impact of trauma on our culture at large. The performance will give us dynamic images of struggle, resilience, and hope that honor and celebrate our teen and young adult performers.
Both choreography and spoken word are co-created by our students, alumni, and professional artists using modern, hip-hop, contemporary dance, and text to create a multi-media journey for audiences that is meant to inspire thought-provoking post-performance dialogue. (The show content is appropriate for youth ages 10 and up).
Light Within the Cracks artists include: Tonnie Sammartano, Nhu Nguyen, Seiha Vor, Angelica Lopez, Dairrick Hodges, Grace Jun, and Kris Apple.
